Every fish oil at its own label dose

What each bottle gives a 50 lb dog if you follow its label, how long the bottle lasts, and what that costs. Need the full arthritis dose? See the cost to reach it on our fish oil dose page. Highest label dose first.

Label dose = what the label says to give a 50 lb dog. Bottle lasts = servings in the bottle divided by that dose. Label dose costs = that dose at the Amazon price read October 28, 2026.

Fish oil vs salmon oil vs krill oil vs chews

All of these sell the same two omega-3s, EPA and DHA. The fish on the front tells you little. What matters is the EPA + DHA per teaspoon, softgel or chew on the label, because that sets how much you give and what it costs.

Servings and cost = what it takes to reach 1,560 mg of EPA + DHA a day for a 50 lb dog, at the Amazon price read October 28, 2026.

Salmon oil

Salmon oil strength varies a lot by brand. The labels we read run from 276 mg of EPA + DHA per teaspoon (Wonder Paws Superhero Norwegian Salmon Oil)6 to 966 mg (Grizzly Salmon Plus).7 Read the EPA + DHA line, not the fish name.

A weaker oil means more oil, and oil has calories. Reaching 1,560 mg with Wonder Paws salmon oil takes 5.7 teaspoons, about 232 calories, or 20% of what a 50 lb neutered adult dog needs in a day.8 Deley Naturals Fish Oil gets there in about 47 calories.9

Krill oil

Krill oil carries its omega-3s in a different form (phospholipids) than fish oil (triglycerides). In a 2020 study, 20 Alaskan Huskies ate dry food with 8% krill meal or with fish oil, each giving about 1.7 g of EPA + DHA a day in total. After 6 weeks, the omega-3 index (EPA + DHA as a share of all the fatty acids in red blood cells) rose from 3.9% to 6.3% on krill and from 3.9% to 4.7% on fish oil.10 The one krill softgel we could price, Vebelkang Krill Oil Omega 3 Softgels, prints 115 mg of EPA + DHA per softgel, so reaching 1,560 mg would take 14 a day, at $1.89 a day.11

Pump oil or softgels?

Pump oils cost less a day and need fewer servings. Softgels suit dogs who won't eat oily food. For the most EPA + DHA per softgel, pick Pet Health Solutions (890 mg each).

Omega chews

Omega chews give 18 mg to 84 mg per chew. We compare them on our skin and coat page.

Questions people ask

What is the best fish oil for dogs?
For most dogs, Deley Naturals Fish Oil: 2 pumps (1 teaspoon) a day gives a 50 lb dog 1,370 mg of EPA + DHA for $0.24 a day at the label dose. For a softgel, Pet Health Solutions Omega-Caps HP Fish Oil costs $0.14 a day; for the NASC seal, Wonder Paws Omega Max 3x Fish Oil costs $0.39 a day.
Is salmon oil or fish oil better for dogs?
Salmon oil is a fish oil, and its strength varies by brand: 276 mg to 966 mg of EPA + DHA per teaspoon on the labels we read. Read the EPA + DHA line and pick the one with the most EPA + DHA per teaspoon.
Is krill oil better than fish oil for dogs?
A 2020 study in 20 Huskies found krill raised omega-3 levels more than fish oil at the same EPA + DHA.10 Per dollar, fish oil costs less: $0.27 a day to reach 1,560 mg with Deley Naturals Fish Oil vs $1.89 with the one krill softgel we priced.
Is Nordic Naturals fish oil good for dogs?
Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet softgels print 255 mg of EPA + DHA each, and the maker holds the NASC seal. At the label dose of 3 softgels a day, a 50 lb dog gets 765 mg (49% of 1,560 mg) for $0.59 a day.
Can I give my dog human fish oil?
Plain human fish oil softgels work if you count the EPA + DHA on the label. Never use chewable, gummy or sugar-free products: some contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.12
Does fish oil for dogs go bad?
Yes. Store it away from heat and sun, and buy a size your dog will finish: at a 50 lb dose these bottles last 16 to 500 days.13

  • EPA + DHA per serving, calories and the dose by weight come from each brand's label, read October 2026. See how we do the math.
  • 1,560 mg a day for a 50 lb dog = 69 mg of EPA + DHA per kg, the amount a 2016 arthritis trial used. It is the same yardstick as our fish oil dose page; skin trials used less (see our skin and coat page). Daily calories use the Merck formula for a neutered adult dog.
  • Picks are the lowest cost a day to reach 1,560 mg of EPA + DHA for a 50 lb dog among pump oils, softgels and makers with the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) Quality Seal; the same three as our fish oil dose page, which has the cost to reach 1,560 mg for every oil and a calculator for any weight.
