Which one to buy
- Buy FortiFlora for the easiest dose. It is a flavored powder: one packet a day on food, 100 million CFU of Enterococcus SF68, $1.03 a day.2, 6 It is the one we pick for most dogs in the best probiotic for dogs, and the maker holds the NASC Quality Seal.5
- Buy Proviable for the most bacteria for the money. One chewable tablet a day gives 5 billion CFU from 7 strains, each printed with its strain code, for $0.67 a day: about 35% less than FortiFlora, or about $134 a year, and it adds a prebiotic.3, 7 Cornell's canine health center says vets tend to recommend a product with a variety of bacteria rather than a single strain.8
- Same dose for every size. Neither label has weight bands, so a 10 lb dog and a 100 lb dog pay the same per day.

What the research says
FortiFlora's strain, SF68, was tested in a shelter trial of 182 dogs and 217 cats: in dogs, statistical differences between the groups were not detected, and diarrhea was uncommon in both; in cats SF68 cut diarrhea lasting two days or more from 20.7% to 7.4%.11 Purina also describes a Colorado State University study in which shelter dogs with diarrhea improved faster on metronidazole plus SF68 than on metronidazole alone.6 Nutramax says Proviable has 6 published studies in dogs and cats, and that in one of them at least one of its 7 strains was detected in 91% of dogs, against 45% for a single strain.7 A 2011 lab test of 25 pet probiotics found FortiFlora held 2.6 times the bacteria on its label, and it was one of 2 of 25 products to pass every check; Proviable was not in that test.1
