How much EPA + DHA by weight

The amount that matters is EPA + DHA, the two omega-3s in fish oil, not the total fish oil on the front of the bottle. The label's guaranteed analysis or supplement facts lists EPA and DHA in mg; add them.

In a 2016 trial, 74 dogs with arthritis got about 69 mg of EPA + DHA per kg a day for 84 days. They showed less discomfort and lameness than dogs given a placebo.5 Vets use 50 to 220 mg per kg, with the highest doses for arthritis.6

Don't go over the safe upper limit: 280 mg of EPA + DHA per 100 calories your dog eats, set by the National Research Council.6, 7 Too much can cause stomach upset, weight gain and slower blood clotting, so ask your vet first if your dog takes an NSAID or is healing from a wound.6
