How much glucosamine for dogs, by weight

For glucosamine hydrochloride, one vet (Matt Brunke, DVM, in dvm360) gives 500 to 1,000 mg a day for a 75 lb dog. That is about 15 to 29 mg per kg; the article calls it "about 15 mg/kg". For the first 4 to 6 weeks, he doubles it.6 We use the low end, 500 mg for a 75 lb dog, scaled to your dog’s weight: about 330 mg a day for a 50 lb dog, and 670 mg to start. For a 50 lb dog, the 20 products in our table with glucosamine printed per serving give 200 mg to 1,000 mg a day after any starting period.

Vet guide = 500 mg a day for a 75 lb dog (the low end of Matt Brunke, DVM, in dvm360), scaled by weight; rounded to 10 mg. Labels give = the lowest and highest glucosamine a day across the products below at their own dose for that weight (amounts printed per serving only). Cheapest = the lowest cost per day that meets the guide dose, at the Amazon price read October 28, 2026.

A day = the servings the label says to give a 50 lb dog, times the amount in each. Where a label starts with a higher dose for 4 to 6 weeks, this is the dose after that. Where a label gives a range (2 to 3 chews), we use the low end. Cost = those servings at the Amazon price read October 28, 2026.

The NASC Quality Seal

The National Animal Supplement Council gives its Quality Seal to companies that pass a third-party audit and keep meeting its quality rules; a company can't buy it.7 7 of the 21 products in our table come from a maker with the seal, going by NASC's own member list, and the lowest cost is PetNC Natural Care Hip & Joint Soft Chews at $0.19 a day for a 50 lb dog.2, 8 See Cosequin vs Dasuquin for how the two Nutramax brands compare.

What the research says

A 2022 review of 72 trials of diets and supplements for arthritis in dogs and cats counted 20 omega-3 trials, with only 2 finding no benefit, and 9 glucosamine and chondroitin trials, with 8 finding no effect and one showing some improvement.9 One trial of 35 dogs with hip arthritis on glucosamine and chondroitin showed better pain, severity and weight-bearing by day 70.6 In a placebo-controlled trial of 78 dogs, fish oil at about 69 mg of EPA + DHA per kg a day brought less discomfort and lameness by day 84; see how much fish oil to give a dog for the dose by weight.10

Questions people ask

What is the best joint supplement for dogs?
For most dogs, Cosequin Chewable Tablets with MSM: 600 mg of glucosamine and 300 mg of chondroitin a day for a 50 lb dog, at $0.26 a day. For the lowest cost with the NASC seal, PetNC Natural Care Hip & Joint Soft Chews is $0.19 a day.
How much glucosamine should I give my dog by weight?
For glucosamine hydrochloride, one vet's guide is 500 to 1,000 mg a day for a 75 lb dog. Using the low end and scaling by weight, that is about 170 mg for a 25 lb dog, 330 mg for 50 lb and 670 mg for 100 lb, with twice that for the first 4 to 6 weeks. At 50 lb, 18 of the 20 joint products with glucosamine in our table give more than the guide at their label dose.
What is the best joint supplement for large dogs?
For a dog 60 to 90 lb, Cosequin Chewable Tablets with MSM: the label says 1 to 2 tablets a day, $0.26 to $0.53 a day. Over 90 lb, Dasuquin with MSM Chewable Tablets, Large Dogs is one tablet a day for $0.52. The lowest cost with the NASC seal at 75 lb is PetNC Natural Care Hip & Joint Soft Chews, $0.19 a day. See best joint supplement for large dogs.
What is the best joint supplement for small dogs?
For a 10 lb dog, PetNC Natural Care Hip & Joint Soft Chews gives 125 mg of glucosamine for $0.05 a day. See best joint supplement for small dogs.
What is the best joint supplement for senior dogs?
Cosequin Senior Soft Chews: 600 mg of glucosamine, 300 mg of chondroitin, 55 mg of EPA + DHA and 250 mg of yeast beta-glucan for a 50 lb dog, $0.45 a day. The same amounts without the beta-glucan are Cosequin Skin & Coat Soft Chews at $0.33 a day; Cosequin Chewable Tablets with MSM has no omega-3 and costs $0.26. See best joint supplement for senior dogs.
How long does a joint supplement take to work in dogs?
Judge it after 6 to 12 weeks, not days. In the fish oil trial above, dogs were checked at 6 and 12 weeks.
Does glucosamine work for dogs?
Results are mixed. In one trial of 35 dogs with hip arthritis, glucosamine and chondroitin reduced pain by day 70.
Can I give my dog human glucosamine?
Read the label for xylitol first. The FDA warns that some chewable vitamins and supplements contain xylitol, a sweetener that can drop a dog's blood sugar within an hour. Human doses are also not set by dog weight.

Notes and sources

  • Amounts per serving and the dose by weight come from each brand's label, read October 2026. See how we do the math.
  • Where a label starts with a higher dose for 4 to 6 weeks, the per-day amounts and costs are for the dose after that.
  • How we pick: Cosequin Chewable Tablets with MSM is the cheapest chew that gives at least the 600 mg of glucosamine a day that Cosequin gives; PetNC Natural Care Hip & Joint Soft Chews is the cheapest chew from a maker with the NASC Quality Seal that meets one vet’s glucosamine guide (330 mg a day); Yuma's Glucosamine Hip & Joint Chews, 240 ct gives the most glucosamine a day per dollar; the fish oil is the cheapest that reaches the arthritis trial dose (69 mg EPA + DHA per kg).
  • Left out of the table: VetIQ Glucosamine Hip & Joint Chews with MSM and Krill (weight bands from retailer listings, not the label), StrellaLab Advanced Glucosamine Chews for Senior Dogs (the label prints jar totals only) and the VetriScience Ultimate Strength and Extra Strength chews for small dogs (weight bands not readable on the label). Where two label bands overlap at exactly the weight shown, that product is left out for that weight.
  • Where a label lists glucosamine only inside a blend with one total weight, the table says so: the label doesn't give the amount.
