What a senior dog's joints get, by weight
Cornell's canine health center says glucosamine and chondroitin help support a senior dog's joints, and that omega-3s such as EPA and DHA may help, but only at high doses.6 For glucosamine hydrochloride, one vet (Matt Brunke, DVM, in dvm360) gives 500 to 1,000 mg a day for a 75 lb dog, and twice that for the first 4 to 6 weeks.7 We use the low end, scaled by weight. A 2016 trial gave dogs with arthritis about 69 mg of EPA + DHA per kg a day and found less discomfort and lameness by day 84.8

ACVS names glucosamine, chondroitin and omega-3 supplements as the most commonly recommended joint supplements.9 4 of the joint chews in our table put EPA + DHA in the chew. Cosequin Senior Soft Chews gives 55 mg a day at 50 lb alongside 600 mg of glucosamine, for $0.45. That is 3.5% of the 1,560 mg trial dose, so the chew is a small bonus and the fish oil is the dose: Deley Naturals Fish Oil (Icelandic wild-caught, 32 oz) reaches the whole trial dose for $0.27 a day, 1.1 teaspoons at 50 lb, 0.6 teaspoons at 25 lb and 1.7 teaspoons at 75 lb. The chew plus the oil costs $0.72 a day at 50 lb. Cosequin Senior Soft Chews adds 250 mg of yeast extract (a beta-glucan source) to the same glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and EPA + DHA as Cosequin Skin & Coat Soft Chews, for $0.12 more a day at 50 lb ($0.45 against $0.33).1, 2 Its label dose for a dog over 60 lb is 1 to 2 chews a day, $0.45 to $0.90 at 75 lb.

The NASC Quality Seal
The National Animal Supplement Council gives its Quality Seal to companies that pass a third-party audit; a company can't buy it.16 Cornell suggests a brand your vet recommends or one with the seal.10 6 of the 20 products with a 50 lb dose in our table come from a maker with the seal, going by NASC's own member list; the lowest cost is PetNC Natural Care Hip & Joint Soft Chews at $0.19 a day.3, 17 Nutramax, the maker of Cosequin and Dasuquin, is not on that list.
What the research says
As dogs age, the cartilage in their joints changes, and older, overweight large breed dogs are commonly affected by osteoarthritis, according to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. It calls a slender body weight "by far the most critical aspect" of managing it, and lists these signs: not wanting to jump onto furniture or into the car, difficulty rising from lying down, and bunny hopping.9 Cornell gives no age or size for "senior"; our tables cover 25, 50 and 75 lb.6
